hey
Did anyone see "Just Shoot Me" last night? They
were interviewing this guy to see if he was good
enough to go out with mya. And the asked him
"favorite Sondhiem show" and he said "I'm gonna shock
you...Passion". And this guy was like a loser type
and they didnt want him going out with Mya, but i was
just waiting for him to come back and say "I should
have said Into the Woods shouldn't I have?" But it
never happened :-) But then i got to thinking, maybe
ITW isnt the most popular Sondhiem show. And now i
just dont know, so i know almost everyone on this list
is a Sondheim fan, so what do yo guys think? what is
the most popular show of Sondheim's?

Andy,
I think that that question is dependent on what you are looking for...
his best collaboration, his best solo, or both. I would have to say
that "West Side Story" is probably the most popular show he has ever
worked on. While "Into the Woods" is my personal favorite, I don't
think that it is the most popular of his shows. I think that of his
shows, and I mean of the ones HE wrote on his own, the most popular or
famous would be "Sunday in the Park With George" or "A Funny Thing
Happened On The Way To The Forum". And I probably shouldn't forget
"Sweeney Todd". But of course, this is just my opinion. And BTW:
Bernadette rocked in the two I have mentioned here! :-)

"West Side Story" by a substantial margin. Of the ones he's written music
AND lyrics for, hmmm... "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,"
perhaps.

I would think West side story or Gypsy would be the
most popular Sondhiem wouldn't you??

I agree that probably A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is up
there in popularity. However, Company, Follies, A Sunday in the Park With
George and Sweeney Todd would also run high on the list. I do think Into the
Woods is probably up high, just not at the top. If it is, it might honestly
be because it had BP in it too.....not that I'm biased or anything!

The reason I singled out "Forum" is because it is one of the only Sondheim
musicals which is well-known even to people who are somewhat unfamiliar with
the theater. (Although "Sweeney" and "Company" have some recognition also.)

PASSION is the most recent Sondheim tony contender, plus Marin Mazzie is
starting to make a name for herself, and PASSION is considered her
breakthrough performance, so it's recently received some extra attention.

I would probably say West Side Story, almost everyone I know has heard of
it.

I love Sweeney Todd, one of those feel-good musicals that the whole family
enjoys. Meat pie, anyone?
I think my personal favorite Sondheim show is the terribly overlooked
Assassins :)

Argh, I must say all the talk about West Side Story
being Sondheim's most popular work has made me
cringe...baaaaaad memories of west Side Story... But
i was thinking more along the lines of solo work so i
guess it doesnt count in the original qauetion I asked
then :-)

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum and West Side Story are the
two most produced Sondheim shows right now... they certainly aren't his best
though...

They're getting ready to revive "Follies" on Broadway, and there's a rumor
circulating that Victor Garber may be starring in it...so there's a good
chance that show may rise quite high in popularity...

Also there's probably going to be a revival of "A Little Night Music"
probably in 2001... Chuck Wagner is working in regional pro productions of
that show right now, along with a couple women who were in the original cast
of "Company". Perhaps Night Music will start to finally get the popularity
it deserves... it's been kinda overlooked since the 70's in a lot of ways...

favorite sondheim show, Assassins. Is it just me or should Bernadette play
Squeaky La Fromme in it?? :)

The regional production will be held at the North Shore Music Theatre, in
Beverly, MA, and really has an all-star casted. (headed by Donna McKechnie
and Merle Louis), featuring actors like Jeff McCarthy, Sarah Uriarte Berry,
the aforementioned Chuck Wagner, etc. Certainly if they wanted to transfer
this cast to Broadway, it would work -- although North Shore is a
theater-in-the-round, so the show would need to be completely restaged with
new scenery, props, etc.

As for other Sondheim works, at the moment I'm listening to "Assassins,"
which I adore. That is also rumored to be in the works for the Roundabout,
although don't hold your breath. "Follies" seems like I much more likely
bet.

Assassins is my favorite too... I don't know that it's officially been
announced that it will be revived, but i do know that they're currently
exploring the possibility to bringing it to Broadway... at least one private
reading has been done already with an all new cast (stephen sondheim and
Victor Garber were amoung the small crowd that saw the reading)...anyways, i
haven't heard of anymore progress, but i'll keep my eyes peeled.
And oh yeah, technically the revival of Assassins on Broadway wouldn't
really be a revival since it never hit Broadway originally.. but i don't
know if that would count with the Academy since it's not a new musical...
but hey...we'll see!
