See headers | Hey everyone!
It seems like ages since anything has been posted on
this list. Well everyone i need your help. Next year
my school's drama department is doinga student run
production, and I'm going to be the director. And I'm
currently looking through different shows. But I
could really use some other peoples input cause I'm
only comming to 2 possibilities. The two I'm looking
at are "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" and "Snoopy".
You see we want a show that has a small cast, but
were not afraid of something with a small chorus. But
we need a show were costumes wouldnt be that
expensive, set too. But the set isnt that much of an
issue cause we have a lot at our disposal. But manly
im looking for a show thats not too hard to do and a
small cast. So if you have any ideas at all please
tell me. It will be greatly appriciated :-)

See headers | Godspell has a small cast, and hardly any set. Chorus line also has a small
cast and nearly no set. I'm assuming you're doing a musical and not a
straight play (there are a ton of straight plays with small casts and can be
done on limited budgets). A couple of summers ago, I did a production of
Jesus Christ Superstar, we had a fairly simple set (which wasn't changed
through out the entire show) and the costumes were clothes we either made or
bought from thrift stores (it was in like 60's/70's style). There was also a
show that we did that summer called, Have a Nice Day, it was all music from
that same era, the story was pretty cute, and it was amazingly cheap to put
on, and a lot of people really enjoyed it. It's hard to give advice, not
knowing what kind of talent you're dealing with, and what kind of show you
want to do. A lot of shows can be modified to fit a limited budget (I mean,
I've seen some pretty extravagant productions of JCS, but I think ours turned
out really well). I hope this helped you out a little. If you have any more
questions, feel free to e mail me, I'll be glad to help you in any way I can.

See headers | i agree...godspell and jesus christ superstar are both good picks that can
be done with a small cast....
Godspell would be a better choice based off of your desciption... i don't
remember the actual casting requirements off the top of my head (when i did
it they used about 20 or so actors), but i think the cast can be done with
between 11-13 actors... and most of the roles can be done by men or women,
so there's no limitations there... there is no required chorus (but it's
optional)...
the set is minimal, but you'll probably need a medium sized amount of props,
which is also optional... i could definetly see the show set in a "black
box" setting if the acting was hammed up....
by the way...i'm glad to see the list picking up on participation...i was
almost tempted to start up a bette midler thread to get things fired up
again, but i think we really don't need to go there...i'm pretty sure
everyone would agree...heh

See headers | Charlie Brown and Snoopy are both great! "And the World Goes 'Round" and
"Company" are ones you should look at as well.

See headers | hi, i just checked my email for the first time in a long time and i got your message about plays with small casts. well, i'm currently in little shop of horrors, and while it's far from my favorite show, it is very easy (all harmonies are basically major triads) and has a fairly small cast (seymour, audrey, mushnik, orin, and the doowop girls). the cast can be expanded through the doo-wops, or by having the dentist play smaller roles in the second act after he dies.
hope this helped! cya!
