so does the stor ever say where she (the witch) goes? If not, I'm
going to make something really cool up. Thanks for the help.

i think she dies....

everyone else that came back in the end were ghosts or spirits...so my
assumption is that she dies, and that her throwing away the beans was an act
of suicide to spare her from the pain of being inevitablely crushed by the
giant's foot (which she believed was going to happen)....

See, I have to disagree with Marc's take on it. I
know lots of people think this, well my friends
anyway, and I always have a long discussion with them
on it :-) I really think she was just sent away by
her mother and punished again, like she was before,
because she lost the beans. And she slowly like sinks
into the ground, disappearing. And all the other
deaths in the show were more obvious, there was more
of a reaction to it. And she sings "All right mother
when? Lost the beans again, punish me the way you did
then. Give me claws and a hunch, just away from the
bunch". So I'm a firm believer in that she was
transported somewhere else by her mother. And just as
everyone elses spirit and / or body appears at the end
to sing, so does hers. And the whole cast wasnt dead,
but they were all there, and so I belive, like someone
else said, that it was her spirit singing words of
wisdom. And thats my two cents :-)

regardless of how we assume her fait was when she "lost the beans"...you
have to admit the witch's character is extremely powerful... probably more
than any other character in the show....

I know i learned alot about myself the first time i saw the show....and
continue to learn more everytime i see it.... and it's through the
characters learning about themselves after experiencing different things...
Into The Woods is SUCH an incredible show....every character pretty much is
a different person at the end than they were at the beginning...because of
what they experienced after going "Into The Woods"... the witch goes from
"Children SHOULD Listen" where she demands authority..to "Children WON'T
listen" where she pretty much says it doesn't matter what you do, a child's
fate is going to happen no matter what you do...to "Children WILL
listen"....saying ther IS hope in raising a child...just be careful how you
do it...because everything you do as a role model will reflect the fate of a
child.... I've never been a parent before.....but somehow i can feel what
sondheim is saying through the witch....and can see that every parent feels
the same somewhere during raising their child... it's really powerful...

this is a late reply... but there is a children's book called "Into the
Woods" that follows the exact same story, it's almost an acompnament(I
really don't know how to spell) for children and it states in there that
the "earth swallows her".. so I assume she dies, but that's how... atleast
that book states.
