Hi everyone,

I usually sit in the background and just read, but wanted to offer my opinion
on the whole Bette Midler fracas. I am a huge fan of both Bette's and
Bernadette's. It's my opinion that they are both incredibly talented
performers, they each bring a lot to their art, and I'd love to see either of
them live. I agree with the general concensus though... their work is pretty
different, and comparing them would be like comparing Judy Garland to the
Beatles. Both great, but what's the basis for comparison?

It's totally all right not to love someone that everyone else does. And
everyone's entitled to their opinion, whether they love someone or can't
stand someone... but I was appalled by the one poster's comment about Bette
being fat/ugly/etc. First of all, I don't think Bette is either "fat" or
"ugly", and second of all...even if you do... these are not impediments to
talent! Plenty of women (and men, might I add) have succeeded without being
blessed with gorgeous faces and splendid bods. Let's just analyze the
talent. If you're going to say "I hate so and so," try to explain why in a
mature manner, such as "I just don't like their performance because blah blah
blah" or even "They did this or that thing in their life, and I can't get
over that", but at least try to have a solid, sensical reason beyond "I don't
think she's cute." It's more respectful to the other artists' fans, and it
makes you look a lot more mature than just name-calling.

Just my two cents,
Jen
