Yeah My show is in Hell week too, but It think we've been in hell from the
begininning. We are doing As you Like it ( word of advise Shakespeare and
High School Drama kids who don't really care that much DON'T MIX!!!!!!)
Hopefully it'll turn out OK. Everyone break a leg in your shows.

Yeah, and you know what else doesnt mix? A show with
nearly no script (tons of improv) and highschool kids
with attitutdes! We had to drop our show because
people werent showing up and well Tina and Tonys
Wedding is kinda hard. But people have such attitudes
it drives me nuts! we lost our director mr brown last
year causehis wife got a job as director of the
tanglewood music program thingy, and well he was
really loved at my school. And some people who were
the "favorites" of mr brown arent adapting well to the
new teacher and they just have serious attitude
problems and they think they run the show and theyre
just not giving her a chance! Im gonna go nuts i
swear, well not really i control myslef infront of
people fine. But goodness, I guess they'll learn soon
enough, like when auditions for west Side Story come
up :-)

First of all, I think it's really dumb not to give some one a chance, especially if it's a director who has the final decision on if you'll be in a show or not. Actually what I was going to say it that you're lucky that you're getting to do West Side Story. There's a school near me which cancelled its production I think because of parent complaints about the violence. I'm sorry, but that's stupid since a lot of people of that generation think that West Side Story was a defining musical(my mother's words not mine). It's too bad that some kids are missing a chance to do it because of some parents. I'm sorry I'm venting. I just wish that people wouldn't deny access to some great musical.

Your post reminded me of a Saturday night Live sketch from awhile back. It
was about two rival gangs, called the Cobras and the Panthers, and instead of
actually fighting they danced (like the style of dancing in the movie). It
made the "violence" in WSS seem so inane it was funny. I think sometimes
parents and administrators get confused on what to endorse and what not to.
I know in my school, if you are actually paying six dollars to see the school
musical, you're not the type to go out a mimic what it shows (that's just me
thinking though- I think the whole "violence in the media" is a crock of
shit). My senior year, our drama director wanted to do "Gypsy" and our
administration turned it down. He said it was too graphically sexual. He
gave no thought to the fact that it is a musical based on historical facts
and portrays a very interesting time in America's history. I know the first
time I saw it ("Gypsy" is one of my favorite musicals) I went out afterward
and read books on Gypsy Rose Lee and stuff. If anything, the show encouraged
me to try and learn more. PS- I am not a burlesque dancer because I saw that
show. :)
