I've got a question for anyone who has her "Anyone Can Whistle" CD at Carnegie
Hall. I just got this CD. I've listened to it three times and I'm having the
hardest time with the story line. I think it's about this town that's very
poor and then this tourist, Fay (BP) comes in and I don't know how she fits in
there. Is she giving the town money, why does she stay, is she some nurse for
a "cookie" bin or something? I don't get what she's doing there or what her
character is trying to accomplish.

Is Cora and Fay both in love with Scott Bakula's character? That's sort of
what I'm getting from "There's always a woman."

Please help me with this, I'm so confused.

Thanks,
Noelle

really appreciate that, thanks so much. I can now listen to it and not be
troubled with figuring out the story line. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Plot of ACW, pretty much:
Cora (Madeline) is the mayor of a broke town, and the only business that's
doing well is the local insane asylum, Dr. Detmold's Sanitarium for the
Socially Pressured, aka "The Cookie Jar."
Fay (Bernadette) is a nurse there.
So Cora's cabinet invents a fake miracle to revitalize the town's and Cora's
popularity. the baby licks the rock and water comes out
That's where Bernadette comes in. The cabinet gets tourists from all over to
come see the miracle (in The Miracle Song) promising all sorts of miracles and
problems will be solved for anyone who partakes of the waters.
Then Bernadette comes along with a bunch of looneys, or "cookies," from "The
Cookie Jar" and wants them to take the miracle waters. Clearly if they did,
and were still looney, the miracle would be revealed as a fake, so the cabinet
tells Fay she and her Cookies will not be allowed access to the waters.
then while the cabinet is arguing with Fay, Fay's "Cookies" mix in with the
tourists who have come to town. Cora's cabinet can't figure out who is sane
and who is insane, and Fay refuses to identify which are Cookies.
that's where Bakula comes in, as Dr J Bowden Hapgood. He divides everyone
into two different groups... but no one can tell which is the sane group and
which is insane
Fay disguises herself as a tourist -- the French "lady from Lourdes". She
pretends she has been sent to investigate the miracle rock
Then she and Hapgood meet and start to get friendly while discussing how to
expose the miracle. He discovers that she's not really the Lady from Lourdes,
and it doesn't bother him, so they start to get romantic. But Hapgood takes
off Fay's "lady from Lourdes" wig and she freezes up. (This part doesn't make
much sense)
Turns out Fay is only able to let go of her need for control and order when
she's disguised, and in real life she can't let go, get drunk or laugh
In fact, she can't even whistle (cue music)
She is undeniably a woman of science, all control and order, but she secretly
wants a miracle
Then comes Madeline's song "Parade in Town" lamenting that Hapgood has stolen
her thunder
Then Hapgood tries to get Fay to tear up the records for her cookies. He even
offers to do it himself and she says don't then he sings a song. Then he
reveals that he's not really a Doctor... he's actually one of Fay's Cookies.
So then Cora and her company decide to turn off the miracle and blame its
failure on Hapgood (I've Got You to Lean On). The townspeople turn on Hapgood
so he and Fay escape to Miracle Rock -- where they find the pump that is
powering Cora's fake miracle
Right. Then Cora gets a telegram from the Governor, who has learned that that
says she will be impeached unless all 49 (it's actually fifty, hehe) cookies
are back behind bars by sundown
But since Hapgood has basically identified EVERYONE in the town as mad, Cora
and co. decide to just imprison 49 random townspeople. That's what "The
Cookie Chase" song is all about.
Fay wants to tell the townspeople about the pump but Hapgood disagrees,
telling her it would disillusion them.
Then comes "There's Always a Woman." I don't think Cora has feelings for
Hapgood, although they did flirt a little during "Simple." Cora doesn't
really have any emotions, she's supposed to basically be just a bitch.
"There's Always a Woman" I think is supposed to be more about the fact that
Fay is trying to undo Cora and her fake miracle
In the end Cora forces Fay to turn in all the cookies, which she does...
except Hapgood. She tells him he's the hope of the world, and they part.
In the end the fake miracle is not revealed. BUT, a miracle is discovered in
the next town which draws everyone away from Cora's. Fay is taking her
cookies to the next town, when she stops for a moment and calls to Hapgood.
No answer. Then she tries to make a noise... and it is a whistle, albeit a
shrill, ugly one. Hapgood appears: "That's good enough." They kiss.
And Cora and Schub decide that it's always worth checking out a new miracle...
and if it's a fake, they can always expose it. :-)
