Hey I was just wondering. In an all out fight to see who is the better
composer or what not who would win in your opinion, Sondheim or Webber?

Oh, come on!! LOL, lots of people (not all) on this list are gonna say
Sondheim. Okay, let me give good sides to both. . .
ALW-(in my mom's perspective) as wonderful ballads and love songs and they
are tuneful
SS-writes things that REALLY touch the soul. He knows where the emotion goes
and being an actress, I'm more inclined to like his music.

If I were to pick though, Sondheim (I'm a little biast)

Sondheim. He writes more than one song per show

Sondheim. Not only does he write beautiful songs such as "Being Alive,"
"Move On," "Not A Day Goes By," "Good Thing Going," "Happiness," etc., but he
USES the music in his shows so well. When he writes songs, he allows the
music to flow right into the story that sometimes you can't tell when a song
ends or begins. His use of the song "Color and Light" in "Sunday in the Park
with George" conveyed so much about George and Dot's relationship and their
characters. When you see a Sondheim show, it never seems like a song was
written and put into the show for production's sake. For example, our high
school recently did "Damn Yankees" and during the read through we also
listened to the cast recording. Towards the end of Act One, there's a song
called "Who's Got The Pain When They Do The Mambo?" And everyone's reaction
at the read through to that song was that the writers of the show pretty much
said "Hey, we wrote this song that has nothing to do with the show, let's add
it anyway! And we'll add some dialogue and a scene around it so it looks
like it belongs!" And while that was a great number to do (I was one of the
choreographers for the show) it didn't have a part in the show. Sondheim's
shows never have that. Even a song like "Good Thing Going" which is thrown
in the middle of "Merrily We Roll Along" as a song written by the character
Frank Shepard may at first seem like an "extra" song, when you listen to the
lyrics it's easy to realize how much it explains the characters and their
relationships.

As for ALW shows, eh... they're nice... but nothing special. I've heard WAY
too much praise for "Phantom of the Opera" and the song "Music of the Night"
(which bears much resemblance to "School Days") And don't get me started on
that other feline show. The only redeeming quality of that show is "Memory"
and I've heard that song SO much I'm sick of it. BUT, I do have to give ALW
credit where credit is due: "Song and Dance" is an amazing show. At some
points a bit (ok A LOT) repititious but songs like "Tell Me On A Sunday"
"Unexpected Song" and "Nothing Like You've Ever Known" are top-notch. Also,
I am quite a fan of "Evita" which ALW did with Tim Rice. My favourites in
that show are "Goodnight and Thank You," "Rainbow Tour," "The Money Kept
Rolling In (And Out)" and "Lament."

Oh Tim don't you just love Lament in Evita!! I have to hand it to Webber on
Evuta, I really like it, and Lament conveys so much emmotion, it makes me cry
every time. Hey you know what everyone? I ask way too many off topic
questions. I'm sorry everyone, it's just i like to know what other people
think about other things, especially now since schools over I have no one to
talk to these things about :-) Well if it really irritates people I'll stop.

I couldn't have put it better, Tim!!! LOL... the ALW part is eh... okie.
I'll give him credit where he deserves it as well... Song & Dance is
AMAZING, and I personally like the music in Joseph. But I LOVE Sondheim...
it might be because I grew up with a Sondheim show... or it might be that
Sondheim's just the better choice because he DOES have feeling and good
stuff with it. His songs are wonderful!!! And they don't remind you of stuff
that you've heard over and over again. HEck, the first time I heard Song &
Dance I felt like I allready knew the whole thing... was the WHOLE thing
based on something? I know the Variations was... or something like that...
But put my vote in for Sondheim, the ultimate God!!!

Love-
Amy

I agree.. Sondheim ALL the way.. But the one thing that ALW has done that
gets me EVERY time I hear it is that line in Phantom of the Opera where the
music box is playing "Masquerade" and the phantom sings "Christine I love
you..." And nothing else. It is absolutely beutiful.
Still, Sondheim is my favorite.. His creativity and talent never
fail to amaze me.
