Hi everyone!

I have a Bernadette-related question for you all. I was wondering if anyone's
high school out there has done "Into The Woods." I'm trying to convince our
musical's director to do the show, but he thinks it will be too hard. If
anyone out there has done it, how did you pull off some of the effects (ex:
the cow dying, giant being killed, etc.)? Anything you could tell me to help
to convince him would be much appreciated. Also, has anyone out there done
any Sondheim shows in high school that went well? I really want to do "Into
The Woods" this year (or another Sondheim show) because the other choices are
"Grease," "Oklahoma," or "42nd Street" and no one really wants to do any of
those.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

I did Into the Woods two years ago. It wasn't a high school
production, it was a local community collage, but it was worse than a
high school production ever would have been. I really don't remember how
we made milky white die. But for the giant, we didn't have a giant's
head fall down or anything. We just looked offstage (this was a really
really terrible show). But there is a company who now has shows that are
for schools to do. I forget which company it is, but I can find out if
you want. It is called Into the Woods, Jr. and it's only the first act
(but hey, you can always add things in!). The songs have been transposed
so young voices can sing them. It's not as good as the original would
be, but it's better than nothing!

Really? Wow... that's too bad. At our school, we do 3 shows a year. A fall
drama (November), a children's-themed show (February), and a musical (April).
Last year the shows were:
Drama - "Scapino!"
Children's - "The Hobbit"
Musical - "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying"

This year:
Drama - "Dracula"
Children's - "Cinderella"
Musical - To be decided

That is so cool! WE do two shows a year...both drama (sometimes they
do a comedy). Usually one is an original play that her husband
wrote... I wish they did musicals though. -Eric

One of the high school's around me did INTO THE WOODS, My friend was in it,
I'll ask him about it. I didn't get to see it, but Zach said it was fun for
him. My drama teacher from last year said it would be hard. (Good thing she
left.) I asked our new one what she wanted to do. At first she told me "A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", and then when I went to ask her
if she would consider doing a different show she said she wouldn't tell anyone
what the show was, because she didn't want to get anyone's hopes up if it
wasn't approved. I guess it's something good, though, maybe she changed her
mind, I don't know though. I wish we were doing ITW, but I don't think so,
maybe next year.

We did Cinderella at our school last year! We did a version that
was like the most recent TV version. I was the stepmother and I got to
sing "Falling in Love With Love"!! It was so awesome. We do two shows a
year. We do a play in November and a musical in March. Plus, we do a
huge choral concert in December.

Hey Tim,
My school did Into the Woods the year before last year. For the giant
thing, they just had the sound of it falling. It was pretty good too. I dont
really think you need a big giant to fall on stage for the audience to get it.
For the cow, the just had someone tip it over (of course ya got to do this
discreately so noone sees) when he dies. I'm not sure this helps.

Blasphemy!!!! This show is a carefully constructed puzzle. Removing or
adding or changing anything takes away the full message.

Robyn, who is admittedly a little overzealous about this show - sorry for the
outburst.

This is funny, because when they were workshopping Into the Woods the people
who didn't "get" the second act kept telling them it would make for a more
enjoyable evening of theater to just do the first act -- it would certainly be
more conventional. (In fact, there was a similar response during the
workshops of "Sunday in the Park with George -- primarily because they
couldn't figure out what to DO for act two; at one point, they even had George
as a performance artist!) Luckily, Sondheim is one of the biggest risk-takers
in professional theater, and the second act that brought the show depth and
meaning was kept in. And now there's a version for schools to do with only
act one... oh well.
