"Gun." It says "gun" in the title, as in Annie Get
Your GUN.
Evidently, Rosie O'Donnell's passionate anti-gun
stance has triggered another controversy.

Reportedly, Bernadette Peters, Tony-nominated star of
the current revival of Irving Berlin's 1946 musical,
has backed out of Tuesday's scheduled taping because
she was asked to cut the line "I can shoot a partridge
with a single cartridge" from the show's show-stopper,
"Anything You Can Do."

The brouhaha comes less than a week after
usual-softballer Rosie confronted Tom Selleck about
the National Rifle Association ads he did a while
back.

According to Monday's New York Post, Peters refused to
make the change and shot down any plans to appear on
the show, though costar Tom Wopat and other cast
members have agreed to step in to perform "My Defenses
Are Down," which contains no firearm references.

O'Donnell denied there was any real problem, telling
the Post, "It's all be worked out. We worked it out."

Meanwhile, O'Donnell's spokeswoman, Lois Smith, told
Associated Press the song change was not caused by any
controversy but simply because Peters could not be
there to sing "Anything You Can Do," which is a duet.

Wopat, the former Dukes of Hazzard star who plays
Annie's fellow sharpshooter, Frank Butler, supports
O'Donnell's views on guns. He told the Post, "I just
do what I'm told. I'm a good camper."

Why, one wonders, didn't they all just choose to sing
"There's No Business Like Show Business"?

Meanwhile, over at The Jerry Springer Show, it's sex
rather than violence that's causing heat.

"Guess what, I'm bisexual," "I'm proud to be a
prostitute" and "My daughter wants to be an adult film
star" evidently now have been deemed taboo in
Springerland.

Studio USA, which distributes the sensation-seeking
syndicated talker, has pulled these segments from this
week's lineup, apparently in the hopes of mollifying
Washington lawmakers upset by the content of Hollywood
productions.

Substituted are such edified repeat segments as "Snake
worshippers" and "Street kids update."

I heard about that, and if it's true that Rosie wanted them to cut the "I can
shoot a partridge" bit, than I'm glad that BP backed out. I can respect anti
gun feelings. I am anti guns myself, but to take every reference to them to
heart is over the top IMHO.

esp references about hitting a target for entertainment purposes. it's not
like the line is "i could blow all your heads off with a single bullet" or
something...

I don't know that I have a lot of faith in that story. If it's true, more
power to Bernadette. If it's not, hey, we know how hectic her schedule is.

Exactly! I agree that if this did happen that
Bernadette was right not to change the lyrics, but
according to her publicist and the official
site...this is not the way it happened. -ERic
